Thirty Day Challenge – Day Nine – Stronghold

Today feels like a write-off for me.

I’ve struggled getting a full nights sleep for almost three weeks now. Today it has caught up with me.

Fortunately, I’m not giving myself that “word limit” to deal with, so I spent today working on everyone’s favourite subject: grammar!

Believe it or not, I was dealing with capitalization with my story. While that doesn’t sound too complicated, it is when dealing with proper nouns and names. Especially when – in a science fiction novel – there’s a lot of pilots. When do you capitalize the “C” in captain? Is it when you give the name? “Captain Derek?” What if you refer to Captain Derek later as captain? Do you capitalize the second “captain?”

Obviously through my sentences, I gave those answers away. There’s a few other situations where it was a problem – not to mention I have other ranking people in the story. Priests, fathers, mothers, presidents, lieutenants, privates, generals. . . and so on! As soon as I came home from work today, I went through my whole story and made the necessary adjustments. That’s all I have in me for the day though. I need to take tonight off to relax.

A lot of folks at work are getting sick. I cannot afford to get sick either.

Stronghold

I listened to my favourite Summoning album today: “Stronghold.” They are a ambient black metal band with music and lyrics primarily tied to the Lord of the Rings books. Despite the “scary” nature of that album cover, they’re music is really relaxing for me. It definitely helped me wind down.

Until tomorrow, friends!

Thirty Day Challenge – Day Eight – Banks of Eden

Major revelations!

Firstly, I’m moving for February 1st. I will be without internet for those few days, so I’ll have some poorly written updates on my story writing here. I’d be updating it on a BlackBerry, y’know?

As for today, I’ve transitioned into the next scene for the novel and am surprisingly adding more challenges to the story itself. While it was never in my nature to do so, it all comes so naturally, I cannot help but write it in!

Whether or not these changes make the editing process is another story (not literally, though! That’d be crazy!).

Secondly, this challenge has certainly been a joy to do so far. What has surprised me most about this challenge is how relaxing I’m actually feeling while writing this. While I think something like NaNoWriMo is a great idea – and definitely worthwhile doing, as I did it and found it very rewarding – I think that it is only a stepping stone into something more incredible.

I’ve been blessed so far to be able to give myself the calmness in between the storms of the day to make time to write. While a few days haven’t been “100%” effort, I still take satisfaction in knowing that I AM in the process of something so much greater! It’s really wonderful when you think about it!

Now, imagine yourself doing this for everything you applied in life. . . Gah!

Banks of Eden

The Flower Kings’ “Banks of Eden” was my favourite album if 2012. It’s really a joy to listen to at all times of the day and much like the Yes album I listened to yesterday, it’s progressive rock. It’s soothing and pretty. Although the album did not fit the scene I was writing at all, it certainly puts me in a chipper mood!

Until tomorrow, fellow readers, writers, and everyone in-between!

Thirty Day Challenge – Day Seven – Close to the Edge

I’m one week in and guess what? I managed to get this afternoon off! Before I did anything I had planned for the day, I decided to write and finish up a scene I’ve spent the past two nights working on. It feels good to finally move forward.

What I found interesting is how I still come up with new ideas for my story as I write. While I have everything plotted out and characters all decided on, I still manage to add little bits and pieces here and there. As I closed the scene today, I left an ambiguous cliffhanger. I don’t even have to resolve it in this book! It’s really interesting.

Whether or not I do resolve the cliffhanger is yet to be seen. Either way, it feels good to still create interesting plot devices after I had them all planned out. It’s amazing how the ideas simply present themselves.

If I tried to follow a word count, who knows whether or not I would’ve came up with these ideas! The freedom I gave myself on this challenge is such a blessing.

Close to the Edge

I gave Yes’ “Close to the Edge” a listen to today because it’s just a great album to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon! Close to the Edge, And You And I, and Siberian Khatru are all amazing songs!

Until tomorrow, friends!

Thirty Day Challenge – Day Six – Some of Life’s Dilemmas & Glorious Collision

These past few days have been shaping up to be some of the busiest and exhausting days I’ve had in a long while.

In a nutshell, along with working a ton, I’ve been busy with some more “life stuff.” After lots of nights with many prayers; as of a few days ago, I learned I will be moving on February first. With only two weeks notice, obviously things are a bit hectic.

But that’s okay, because I can still make writing happen!

Today – well, tonight – was a bit of a drag for writing, as I really am exhausted. I haven’t had a full nights sleep in two weeks, and it’s definitely taking its toll on my body.

I tweeted this earlier tonight: “Life is moving too quick at the moment. Remember to breathe & relax. Moving slowly is calming.” I definitely need to eat those words up as I know I’m going to be more overwhelmed shortly. But I have a writing job to do, and a challenge to accomplish!

Glorious Collision

My neighbours who live above me are tremendously loud tonight, so I felt like drowning them out with Evergrey’s “Glorious Collision.”

Until tomorrow, my friends.
